DO IT YOURSELF CORNER           June 2005

There are times when DIY is just a no no...

This mahogany deck was originally coated with Cabot's Australian Timber Oil finish. When the homeowner called us the once beautiful finish had started to fail.

The deck is exposed to direct sun for most of the day. Being adjacent to a pool adds moisture to the mix. Over time the combination of sun and water makes a true recipe for disaster.

The homeowner wanted to recoat the deck but was smart enough to realize he could not just refinish over what was already there. Sometimes...doing it yourself is simply not practical.

During the cleaning process we had to remove or "strip" the old finish with an application of an alkaline cleaner followed by a light power wash. To brighten the wood we appliedf an acidic wood brightener to restore the beauty of the mahogany and leave the wood with a balanced PH.

This is an extremely important process if you want to extend the life of your new finish.

When we finished our cleaning process the beautiful deck surface looked like new—with all previous sealers removed. After the the surface is thoroughly dry the homeowner can apply his sealer or stain.
